Watercolor/Drawing/Painting
A sketchpad and pencil don’t take up much space, and traveling will provide all kinds of new and awesome inspiration. If you are not an artist, learn how to do watercolor paintings, there is a lot of inspiration where you are.
This paint set has it all, you can start right away with making beautiful artwork.
Stargazing
Stargazing is fun and is so interesting to learn more about the night sky. Star Chart is an app made to give basic star knowledge to those that are interested. It is also fun to search for symbols in the sky with the kids.
Use these binoculars with a phone adapter so you can actually take pictures of the night sky.
This notebook helps you to identify all you see in the sky. It includes constellation maps, a schedule of total lunar eclipses, a guide to the moon’s phases, and a tear-out simple astrolabe.
Making a Bonfire
Learning how to make a pretty bonfire is an art. What is the best wood to use for making a fire, and how to set it up so it will burn for hours without a lot of smoke… Kids love to sit at the fire and also love to help make one. And of course, don’t forget to make smores or cook something delicious over the campfire.
Go kayaking
You can bring inflatable kayaks in your RV because they don’t need a lot of storage space. Even if you are a bigger crowd, you can definitely bring some toys to have fun. If you camp near a lake, take the kayaks out for a morning ride, and enjoy the quiet and the cooler temperatures while everybody else wakes up.
You can get reasonably priced 1 and 2-seater kayaks or paddleboards.
Go bike riding
Bike riding is fun and you can explore trails and places that are just too far to get if you walk. If you are not an athletic biker, get an e-bike. You can get foldable ones that are easy to bring with you in the camper. Just make sure to get a good lock if you keep the e-bike outside your RV during the night. And also get a cover for it.
Collect shells, rocks, shark teeth
What can be more relaxing than taking a stroll on the beach and collecting shells and interesting-looking rocks? I was even lucky to find a shark tooth during one of my beach walks.
It doesn’t cost anything, just enjoy the fresh air while walking on the beach and breathing in and out calming the mind.
Go fishing or learn how to fish
If you like to do a quiet sport, how about fishing? You can sit comfortably in a chair, enjoy the outdoors and watch the wildlife. Just make sure you know where you can fish and if you need a license for it. There are beginner fishing sets, so if you are not sure if this is a good hobby for you, start with a less expensive set.
Learn a new swimming technique
If you are like me, not a very good freestyle swimmer, it makes sense to learn it while you have the time. You can find pretty good youtube videos or maybe you find a good teacher within your family who can show you how to practice to become a good swimmer.
Search for the biggest tree, the highest mountain
Having fun with the kids is the best time, especially while you are out in nature. You don’t need a lot of tools or electronics, use a rope and let the kids measure the thickness of different trunks. Let them make signs for the 5 biggest trees and give the winner a treat.
Geocaching
“Geocaching is a type of global treasure hunt of people looking for caches, or hidden stashes of objects. Geocaching may also be described as a series of hide-and-seek games, where hiders provide online clues for seekers. Seekers use global positioning system (GPS) devices to find hidden caches”.
If you like to play a modern hide-and-seek game, get a geocaching app and start searching. There are many different geocaching apps for your mobile phone available and it sure will be a lot of fun for the whole family.
Learn how to shoot good photos and videos
Do you ever think the pictures you take are not the best? Why not learn some tips and tricks on how to take great pictures and videos?
Check out YouTube for all the tips and then practice with your phone. While you are out in nature you have the best objects to shoot and film. How about hunting for wildlife shots? It takes some patience but wildlife watching can be very interesting. And then print the best pictures and decorate your RV with them.
You might even be able to sell your best shots to traveling or wildlife magazines.
Learn a new language
Or learn what interests you. There are so many online courses you can take for free or for a very small fee. Set up every day an hour to do ‘schooling’ and I promise you, the vocabulary is easy to remember if you repeat it every day. Duolingo is a good App if you want to learn a new language.
I offer an online course on How to update the interior of an RV. So how about learning how to paint, add a new floor, and decorate your dated-looking interior? And then decide what you want to change in your RV. Maybe start with the wall color or add an accent wall?
Play new games
Yes, we play UNO, Monopoly and Scrabble a lot. But how about some new games that could be fun? There are games just for two people to play and also some for up to six or eight people. You never know what you explore new.
Write a book
Have you ever dreamed of writing a book? Or if a book sounds too overwhelming for you, how about writing articles for a magazine? Write down all your adventures and pitch it to various online or print magazines. Or just write down a new trail hike you discovered, write a review for an awesome restaurant or National Park.
Write a travel guide / share your road trips
So many fellow RVers are searching for tips to take easy road trips. For example, give tips on what roads to take if you leave from NC and want to head towards AZ. Write a detailed guide on where to start, how long to drive, where are best stops, campgrounds, and boondocking stops, and what to do in the area. You could even sell this information to RV online portals.
Rock painting
What a great idea – and you don’t need to be an artist. Rock painting is fun and doesn’t need a lot of material. Get a couple of brushes and different paint colors and start painting flowers, and geometric or fantasy designs on the rocks. Leave them behind for someone to enjoy your artwork.
Crochet and knitting
If it gets cooler, I love to knit scarves, socks, or blankets. It is easy to learn and if you start with simple items to make it is very rewarding. Make Christmas gifts or decorate your RV with a colorful blanket, or knit a blanket for the dog.
Model Kit Building
Are you more into making cool models like airplanes or cars? Do you have the patience and the persistence to finish a model?
The time spent model building is incredibly rewarding in today’s hectic world. It gives you time to relax, focus and unwind and you have a cool display item. How about an RV model kit?
Collect Stickers
An easy way to spend time is to go shopping for various stickers. I love to collect postcards and stickers from the areas where I am at. You can make awesome artwork out of it. I just wouldn’t recommend sticking the stickers directly onto your RV or wall. Instead, get a poster board and create artwork. You can easily remove it and take the poster with you in case you ever sell your RV.
Start jogging or power walking
Are you an active camper? Do you wonder what kind of sport you can do while camping? Well, besides hiking you can of course learn how to jogg or even better, how to power walk. Power walking is easier on your joints and the only thing you actually need are good walking shoes.
Get walking sticks and train your arms and legs by starting slowly. If you are comfortable walking raise the speed for more intense training. You can do this activity by walking around the campsite or finding an easy trail.
Power walk daily and you will train your whole body. And after you are done with your power walk the food tastes so much better.
Beach Clean Up
Whenever we are at a beach, I bring a bag and collect the trash people leave behind. If everybody would pick up a couple of plastic trash from the beach or your hikes, your surroundings would look so much better.
If you have issues with your back bending down, this tool makes it so much easier.
It is also a fun game with the kids. Who collects the most trash gets a treat or can choose the next activity.
