If you want to make good money by selling your house, you have to make sure it looks great. And no matter where we lived, we always made sure that these Top 5 Home Updates before selling where made and the house looked good.
You don’t want to overdo it and spend too much money on updating your home. This is why I made the list with the Top 5 updates you should check out and eventually update to get the best money for your home.
Top 1 Home Update before selling
PAINT the interior (approx. 500 Dollars)
This is the easiest project you can do. Paint the whole interior or let it paint in a neutral color. Do NOT paint in a yellowish beige, because beige makes a room look small and dark. Go for a light neutral grey, you can’t do anything wrong with that color. Because everybody can envision themselves and their furniture in a neutral and light environment.

KITCHEN (Cabinets approx. 300 Dollars)
Make sure the kitchen looks good. If you can, paint the kitchen cabinets because it is such an amazing change. A kitchen cost a lot of money when you are thinking of redoing it, but painting is a cheap and easy procedure if you have an odd looking wood kitchen.
It adds so much value if you paint the cabinets. Here is How to paint kitchen cabinets without sanding and priming. Check it out. It cost all together 300 $ and made us thousands after selling.
If the appliances are old think about exchanging them. Stainless steel is always a good choice. We added a new range, range hood and a new dishwasher while we lived in this house.
And in the other house I changed the countertops from an uneven Laminate to a pretty white Quartz countertop. It was worth every Penny.

BATHROOM (approx. 150 Dollars)
There are really some totally easy and cheap updates to do in a bathroom. Check out what you could update in your bathroom:
- Does the vanity look beaten up and not very pretty? Paint it. Use the same color as you used painting the kitchen cabinets.
- What about the countertop? Is it yellowish looking? Paint it. It came out really good. https://colorfuldesigner.com/how-to-paint-laminate-countertops-easy-with-regular-paint/ or have them exchanged if the countertops are just in bad shape.
- Is the floor ugly and dated? Add pretty vinyl tiles. You can install them on top of your ceramic tiles, just add a primer.
- How are the walls looking? Still covered in old wallpaper or are the walls uneven with a lot of holes? Add shiplap. I loved that project and it was done in no time.
- Paint the walls and add pretty accessories.
- Or just add a new mirror or add a frame to an old mirror. Instant update for a couple of dollars.https://colorfuldesigner.com/how-to-add-a-white-diy-wood-frame-to-a-mirror-easy/

Sometimes small updates just don’t do the job and you have to consider a complete renovation. If you find a good contractor plan at least 3 weeks to get the bathroom remodeled and you will have to spend thousands of Dollars, depending on size and material you are choosing. But sometimes it is really worth it to get the house sold.

CURB APPEAL (approx. 200 Dollars)
This is the fastest update of the Top 5 Home Updates before selling. Make sure your house looks great from the outside. This could mean planting some flowers or adding some flower pots, having the house power washed or painting the front door. Adding a pop of paint to the front door can really make a difference. From looking dull and boring to pretty and spectacular.
Here are some favorite door colors and their meaning:
Door Color Green
There are many shades of green that may add just the right splash of color on your door. Whether you choose a subtle or a bold shade of green, it should create an atmosphere of warmth.
Green is the color of money. People living in this house could mean that they are ambitious and good with their finances.
Door Color Blue/Teal
Blue Toile (784) very similar to turquoise by Benjamin Moore is a rich mid-tone blue that makes a perfect exterior door paint color. It is both warm and inviting and has a hint of green. According to Benjamin Moore, this classic color captures the ageless appeal of traditional toile-patterned linens and fabrics.
And because I love Sherwin Williams paint I would recommend to check out SW 6804 Dignity Blue or SW 7610 Turkish Tile if you are deciding on a teal.
This shade indicates emotional balance and dreaming big, perhaps even with a touch of a romantic heart.
Door Color Yellow
If your house exterior is dark, maybe it has black or dark grey shutters, a yellow door would add and amazing pop of color and light. I would look into Sherwin Williams SW 6902 decisive yellow or a SW 6915 Citronella.
A yellow door suggests that the homeowner is creative and logical with an uplifting attitude. It could also be that a morning person lives within.
Door Color Red
Red is an excellent color choice for fans of Feng Shui home styling. Red normally indicates that the homeowner is likely succeeding at life, loves to entertain and receives a lot of attention.
Door Color Blue
I love a dark blue door in combination with a sparkling white frame looks stunning. Maybe Sherwin Williams SW 7602 Indigo Batik or SW 6237 Dark Night fits to your house, but don’t forget the white door frame for the sparkle. This could be the ideal door color to add elegance to your home.
A blue door speaks of peace, a love of truth, and a well grounded individual.

And stunning looking light fixtures give the house a great atmosphere and they add so much extravagance you want to create when selling your house. Make it look really expensive and prime. A little bling isn’t a bad thing.

For me it is always very hard to say good-bye to a house I spent a lot of time in and felt comfortable. Because I always make the house I live in mine. Painting, remodeling, updating – I am all in and I spend a lot of sweat and back aches making it pretty.
Reverting it back into a neutral look is heart breaking for me – but well, off we go to the next adventure.
Let me know if you struggle with a project, I will be happy to help you.
See you next week
