1. If your budget is $100:
First declutter the room to allow more space and to see if you can rearrange your furniture. Or even get rid of a furniture piece you don’t like anymore.
- Is your sofa pushed against the wall? Try pulling it towards the center of the room, if you have enough space in the room.
- You don’t like the color of your sofa anymore? It is dark and dated? Cover it with a pretty throw and add colorful pillows.
- Is the room not very inviting and a little blah, pick a color to paint an accent wall or wallpaper an accent wall. You can find a lot of peel and stick wallpaper, which is easy to apply:

2. If your budget is $500:
Did you declutter and add an accent wall?
Then step two is to look for a nice painting, an awesome artwork that inspires you. You can get cool and very reasonable artworks in
- thrift stores,
- or get a colorful poster and frame it,
- or have your favorite pictures printed out and arrange them on a big poster board.
You can get your own pictures printed in poster size for reasonable costs. Use Tesa Poster strips to hang them up.
Add a cozy rug and fresh, new pillows if you need more color in your room. Pillows are easy to exchange and you can give the room some pop by adding funky patterns and designs.
If you don’t like it very colorful but want to add a little color, just get some pretty plants.
Add plants that don’t need a lot of care and actually clean the air. The list below gives you a variety of plants, which absorb pollutants given from synthetic materials in the house. It looks good and your air is clean. Can’t beat that.
3. If your budget is $1,000:
After step one and step two think about adding step 3 in refreshing your living room.
Good lighting is so important if you want to feel comfortable. Add a pretty reading lamp next to your recliner, update the basic living room lamp with a pretty chandelier or add a cool floor lamp to highlight your art work.
Add new light sources which makes it possible to put the focus on your new artwork or anything you want to highlight.

4. If your budget is $2,000 – $3,000:
After step 1, 2 and 3:
Are you thinking about buying a nice and comfortable new chair to refresh your living room? Or do you want to add a cool new sofa?
A new sofa is the most effective change you can make to your living room. Think quality and color here, because you want to keep it for some time.
You can always pimp up a gray sofa with funky pillows or a colorful throw.
Pick a color you are going to love for a long time because it is an investment if you are going to buy quality.
I once bought a cheap sleeping sofa because I liked the design.
But unfortunately, nobody could sleep on it or even sit on it for a longer time. It was a hard, uncomfortable sofa, and it was a total waste of money. It is gone now.
So try out a sofa or chair before you buy it. Of course, it is easy and comfortable to buy furniture online, but unfortunately you can not be sure if the color fits the rest of your furniture and if it is actually comfortable to sit on.
Invest the extra time and visit some furniture warehouses. Check the fabric color if it fits your other furniture and try it out. Sit on it, lay on it, make yourself comfortable.
You don’t want the hustle of returning a sofa anyway. Take your time and go to different places to be sure you are making the right choice.

How to Refresh your Living Room on a Budget – Where to start from scratch
No matter what your situation is, first decide on a color scheme you would like for this room.
If your house has an open floor plan, the color and the style should fit to the rest of your house.
If you are not sure what you like, go to Pinterest and select pictures of furniture and rooms you like. Just add a lot of pictures onto a board. After some time you will notice, what your favorite style is.
Then start creating a Mood Board to define your style and likes. This really helps to clarify what you like and what you don’t like.
You can also take the design quiz if you are not sure about your furniture style. Straight lines and reduced colors give a good background to add colors of your choice.
