Change is in the air –
Here are some easy tips to make simple changes in your home.
After being on the road with our little camper for 12 days, I was done living on about 80 sqft with a man and a midsize dog. Glad to be back in my house.
Now, the first thing I do when I am back is re-decorating my living room. I bring home new inspirations from the road trip. All the different places I have visited, the beaches and the mountains with their powerful light and somehow, I try to catch this atmosphere in my house. At least I try to create the same feeling in my home.
Always start with decluttering!
And I have to get rid of clutter. Stuff, which didn’t bother me before we left on our trip, has to go now! I need to have space around me. No wonder, after living on 80 sqft. and constantly searching for things. I am definitely not the person who could live in a tiny house. I need some space to move.
Here is the declutter challenge, if you need a checklist where to start:
Here are easy re-decorating tips, if you need some fast changes:
Pillows and Rugs:
I love pastels and light colors – especially in summer when you also dress light and airy. I try to create the same feeling and incorporate the colors in my living and bedroom with
- new pillows,
- a new curtain or a
- new throw.
I always have some spare decoration items in my closet or basement so I can re-decorate whenever I feel like it.
Pillows, throws, wallpaper (peel and stick), I buy on sale if they fit into my living room or bedroom color scheme and just save them for the next season.
If I want to re-decorate, I always have something available to work with.
Tight budget? Make it yourself
A good savings idea is to make the pillow cases yourself, if you have a sewing machine. Go buy some different kinds of fabrics and sew a couple of pillow cases, a table runner or a table cloth. It is not very hard and so much cheaper if you do it yourself.
If you have no sewing machine, use spray adhesive. But don’t forget to cover up your table before you use it, it can be a little messy
And if you can afford it, invest in a new rug. This one you see here in my living room was around 90 $, I think pretty reasonable and it fits perfectly to the color of my couch.
Holiday Pictures and Posters:
Look thru your holiday pictures you took, choose the ones with the same color scheme.
For example, lots of blue tones from the ocean and beach or lot’s of different greens from hiking thru the woods, or pictures all pretty colorful. Have them printed out and arrange them in a picture frame and hang them on the wall. Brings back memory and looks great.
Or did you go to a concert and bought a poster or two? Frame them and hang them up if it fits in the hallway or living room.
Or do you like to collect postcards, stickers, funny stuff? Arrange it all in a frame and hang it up. It also looks great at the entrance, hallway or over your desk.
These ideas are easy and cheap to make and so cool to look at.
Don’t like it anymore? Exchange it, no handyman needed.
Re-decorate your living room
And here are some examples from my living room. The couch is grey and the wall paint is light grey. Perfect neutral colors for arranging and exchanging everything around whenever I feel like it. And I need change pretty often.
This looks pretty boring.
Re-decorate your home fast and easy:
Now here are some examples, how to change the atmosphere of a room with little, inexpensive new arrangements:
- put a rug in front of your couch,
- match the pillows to the rug color and to the art work
- add a side table
Want to change your color theme?
Exchange the art work behind the couch and decorate the room with matching colors.
I choose a green chair, green/blue pillows, green deco. Voila, that’s it and looks instantly so much better.
New atmosphere with a green rug or a cow hide.
I always keep pictures, posters, different pillows and chairs in my basement in case I get the urge of re-decorating.
My house is very colorful, because I like it happy around me.
This is how the whole living room looks like – I know, lots of colors, not everybody’s thing, but I just love it.
