Interior Trend Number one for 2021/2022:
Add bold colors to your rooms like a bold accent wall
Yes right, the times of neutral beige, yellowish brown and dark grey on your walls is over. Say hello to colors.
Keep a neutral white as your background color, especially if you combine it with trendy colors.
If you want to start slow and try it out first, there are many ways of incorporating colors. For example, start with an accent wall in your living room. Walk into the room and decide which wall is the best for an accent wall, which wall draws all your attention. Now either add a big colorful artwork or paint this wall in a bold color.
Are you getting a little overwhelmed and need to try adding colors out first before you go all the way in?
Get colorful artworks or make a gallery wall. Start easy and get used to colors. Do you like the new look? Now add colorful decor like pillows, blankets, vases if you are getting braver and want to experiment more with colors.
Don’t want to paint the whole wall? How about adding a pattern to your accent wall, like a circle or a triangle in a bold color. If you like to experiment why not paint the pattern over two walls? Be creative and do what you like and love. Or start with getting decals that you can add and remove easily from a wall.
Interior Trend Number 2 – Add color unexpectedly
Add color and pattern to unexpected parts of your house, paint your doors, paint the stairways, and even laundry rooms can be updated pretty stylishly and colorful.
If you don’t like to paint, use peel and stick wallpaper. Remove it if you want to change the style easily – also a great idea if you live in a rental place.
Get rid of the carpet and make your stairs a focal point with peel and stick tiles, add wallpaper stickers or just paint them. How awesome is this? And you can create this look easily with very little work and on a very small budget.
Another cool trend – if you want to start slow adding color – is to only paint the door width. This can look pretty amazing and surprising when opening a door. See for yourself here:

Interior Trend Number 3 – Add color and pattern to the floor
Add patterns everywhere: You love your hardwood floors, the neutrally painted walls, and very cool-looking furniture? But now you feel something is missing and you want to add some color and pattern? Yes, this is how you can easily add pattern and warmth without remodeling anything in your house:
Add a rug, or add a couple of rugs and if you want to get wild, you can even stack rugs. But maybe you want to start with adding one rug first:

Interior Trend Number 4 – Geometric patterns everywhere
Geometric patterns fit everywhere. If you don’t like it too colorful but you want to add warmth with textiles here are some great interior ideas. You can add these blankets to your sofa or use them as a bedspread. Cover a dated-looking chair with a blanket to make it look beautiful again.
These blankets are made out of Alpaca wool and are warm in winter and cool in summer. And look amazing.
This is a perfect rug that fits to the geometric blankets. I love almost all of the rugs from ruggable.com because the best thing about these rugs are that you can actually wash them in the washing machine.
My ruggable rug is in our camper and it gets dirty often. But it also gets clean pretty fast because you can wash them in the washing machine. Works perfect in an entry or mud room but the patterns actually look amazing everywhere.
Click on the rug and see the whole collection from ruggable.

If you go with geometric rugs, also add pillows and blankets that go with the same pattern in order to follow your color scheme. I really like these pillows they fit perfectly to the rug. If you want to add color, get a geometric pattern in a vivid color:

Interior Trend Number 5 – Light fixtures
It is often forgotten but so important to invest in good-looking light fixtures. Updating lights can make such a great impact on a room design because the eyes are normally drawn to look up at the light fixtures. So check through your house and exchange these ugly boob lights I am seeing everywhere:
And no need to go over budget, because here is a selection of light fixtures that look so much better than the standard light fixture:
Trendy right now are light fixtures with beads and knots. Also, rustic looking light fixtures look great and can be combined with any other upcoming trend.
Interior Trend Number 6 – Multifunctional rooms
The time where you had a formal dining room, a formal living room, and a family room is over. Now with a lot of homeschooling and home office going on, most of us don’t have the luxury of designating space for just one purpose.
Adding a cool looking desk in your living room and a bookshelf can actually look very hip and doesn’t need to look messy.
Interior Trend Number 7 – Indoor-Outdoor living
Use your outdoor space to make it comfortable for you. If you live in the south as we do, you will need shade to enjoy yourself outdoors. We added wooden planks on top of our concrete slab (because we like it better that way) and added a gazebo for shade.
Now the only thing you need to add is a comfortable sofa or lounge chairs and the summer can start of right.
You can also add curtains to the sides of your gazebo to add more shade if you want to. Or if you need to escape mosquitos, add a see-through mosquito fabric and close your newly created lounge area up.
Now you just need some comfortable seatings and you are almost done:
If you live in rather cooler areas and you are thinking more about adding a hot tub, here is what we are using.
We love our hot tub which we also use during the hot season as a cool tub. And if you want to store it over summer, you can just deflate it and put it in the garage until the next cold season starts.
Some basic interior design rules that will make it easier to decorate your rooms:
- What is the 60 – 30- 10 rule? The explanation is: “It’s a classic decor rule that helps create a color palette for a space. It states that 60% of the room should be a dominant color, 30% should be the secondary color or texture and the last 10% should be an accent”. I use this rule as follows: 60 % is a bright neutral wall color like a white or light grey, 30 % is either wallpaper or a painted wall in an accent color and 10 % is decor using vibrant colors like yellow, green or pink to add more excitement to the room.
- Neutral walls give colors a great background and let them shine.
- Invest in good light fixtures and light the room from various light sources.
- The darkest color should normally be on the floor, medium color on the walls, and the lightest color on the ceiling.
- Stick to your color scheme if you want to have a cohesive look.
