How do you start painting your kitchen cabinets with Heirloom Traditions All in one paint:

If you have decided to update your kitchen cabinets because getting new cabinets is not in the budget right now, this is a fast and pretty easy project if you use the paint recommended.

First, you want to be sure that you pick the right color. So there are various options for you:

1. If your kitchen is small and dark you want to look at light colors like Cashmere, Bone or Linen.
2. If you have a pretty large kitchen and you want to make it look more interesting, go with a two tone kitchen. Dark on the lower cabinets and light on the uppers. Like a dark blue (Polo or Mediterranean) and a light Cashmere or Colosseum on the upper cabinets.
3. If your kitchen is big and dark, use a light color and add an interesting backsplash. If you have an island, use a different color on your island to create a wow factor.

Now you just need to know how to start painting your cabinets:

The preparation you need to do before you start painting: (Takes 1 – 2 hours)

1. Take the cabinet doors off the hinges and remove the hinges for easier painting. Put them in a bowl together with the screws.
2. Mark your cabinet doors (use masking tape and mark them) in order to put them back on to the same cabinet.
3. Remove the hardware and decide if you want to keep it or if you want to exchange it. If you decide on new hardware, you might have to close the holes.
4. Use wood filler and squeeze it into the holes, let it dry.
5. Lightly sand over it until it is smooth and even.
6. Get a bucket of warm water and add some TSP. Use a microfiber cloth and wash all the cabinet doors as well as the outside of your cabinets down. The surface has to be clean and grease free.
7. Use a dry microfiber cloth and wipe it dry before you start painting.

How to paint your cabinet doors front and back and the outside of your cabinets:

1. Start with the back of the cabinet doors.
2. Lay the cleaned cabinet doors on a table or a straight surface. Put a spacer underneath so you can easily paint the sides of the doors also.
3. Stir the paint for at least 2-3 minutes thoroughly with a wooden stick. This is important to get all the color pigments stirred very well.
4. Use a brush and start painting in one direction.
5. Make sure you don’t miss the trim corners and the sides of the cabinet door.

Check if all the sides are also covered with paint. If your cabinets have a trim make sure all the corners are painted. Also, check that you don’t have any puddles of paint in the corners of the trim.

Let dry. Then check if the paint looks good and you can turn the door around and paint the front of the door. Paint exactly the same way as you painted the backside of the door.

Now also paint the cabinet frames. I did not remove anything inside my cabinets because I only painted the outside of the cabinet. I also used my kitchen while I was painting and this project did not interfere with my life.

The drawers also stayed in the cabinets. I only removed the hardware to be able to paint the front easier.

What is the next step?

After your first coat of paint let it dry for at least 3 hours. Make sure you are working in a clean surrounding without blowing dust and pet hair (ask me why this happened to me?)

After 3 hours check if the paint looks good and is dry.

Now turn the cabinet door and add your first coat on the front of the door. Make sure the door is painted well and all the trim corners and sides are covered with paint.

Let dry for at least 3 hours.

How to apply the second coat of Heirloom Traditions paint?

Now use a foam paint roller. Depending on the size of your cabinets, use a small or medium-size roller. Add some paint into the paint tray and roll your roller inside the paint. Then roll the paint on your cabinet door. Make sure you roll the roller with the wood grain in one direction for the best results. Don’t forget the sides of the cabinet doors.

Start with the back of the door so you can practice before you paint the front of the door.

While you let the paint dry for at least 3 hours (better overnight) paint the outside of the cabinets also twice.

What to do after the second coat of paint?

Wait until the second coat is dry. Then check the front and the back if you missed a spot.

Make sure you use a dry microfibre cloth and wipe over it to check for any missing spots. If you are satisfied add the hardware and screw the doors back onto the hinges.

IMPORTANT LAST TIP:

Be gentle during the first 30 days of curing time. The paint needs time to harden and therefore you don’t want to be rough and get scratches. So just make sure to pay attention during this time in order to enjoy your newly painted kitchen.

This is a painted cabinet door with the color Polo. The sheen is matt but still very easy to clean. If you want a satin sheen, you would need to add a topcoat in satin.

This sheen doesn’t leave any fingerprints and is really easy to clean with a wet sponge or cloth.
